Yellowstone River Mapping – Sweet Grass County, MT

Sands Surveying Inc. provided over 360 cross sections along forty miles of the Yellowstone River through Sweet Grass County for a floodplain study for the county.  Survey-grade static and real-time GPS were used with SONAR to complete the survey.  This survey was conducted according to FEMA Data Capture Standards.

The field work was collected through the month of November with weather conditions ranging from 70 degrees and sunny to below zero with snow and violent winds.  The cross sections were completed by wading the smaller channels and using a boat in the main channel.  A jet boat was the preferred choice.  However, due to the shallow water in sections and access point locations to the river, a drift boat had to be utilized.  Even with the adverse weather conditions, the field work was completed on time.

Office calculations included checking the data, drafting exhibits for each cross section and writing QA/QC reports.
